Introduction and history
One of the ethnics in the Matunggong Sub-District is Rungus. Apart from Badu’ Masap, the men of this ethnic also has their costume that is Mogah.
Such name is given based on the woven cloth of the Iranun ethnic that is Mogah weaved to about 1.2 meters long. The Iranun ethnic makes it as sleep cover two meters long.
This costume has a background of black and red colours, and has pattern that stripe horizontally to the lower part according to the cloth’s length. The pattern’s colours are yellow, orange, white, red and green. Mogah resembles a long kimono decorated with ornaments normally worn with other traditional costumes like Pinakol, Pinokos, Hokos and Sandal, and worn in the Rungus traditional dance of Mongigol.
Black is the main colour of their attire. According to beliefs, the colour black signifies power or of god’s colour that can protect the wearer from bad supernatural beings. Some parties said that black as colour of traditional costume is suited to the live lihood and natural situations at that time. Other traditional colours are white, yellow and red with white and yellow as the colours for design pattern and stripes.
Nature is made as guidelines in creating the motifs, among them are:
Benurunsi – of snail and clams.
Binongkok – elements of a frog’s image.
Binorokidung – theme of snake’s trail. Other terminology is Rinugading.
Binugang – resembling bird.
Binutuan – resembling the entwining of tree bark.
Inansal – of fences.
Inompuling – of fish gaff.
Inugarang – resembling iguana or small lizard.
Inumpizos – resembling caterpillar.
Kinadamazam – the kadamazam fruit.
Kiambang Kiapu – wood flower.
Kinulit – theme of banana skin.
Lijawan - ferns.
Linimut – theme of beetle’s image.
Linopung – of python.
Linopung do Kisorod – like a snake with fins.
Livato – of spirit and ghost.
Minimbayan – of cake wrapper.
Mitotorungak – of the society that is groups.
Monsimuung – of spirit’s or animal’s image.
Pinodkimo – oyster shell.
Sinikuvan – thread wheel.
Sinubung – wood measurement with something inserted in its middle.
Sinusuk Rabung – bamboo shoot.
Tinikou Sada – a fish.
Tiningulun – of human shape.
Tinolutug – a square surrounded with triangles.
Tinubou – theme of a peacock dancing.
Tinukad – of staircase.
Vinalahan – rattan flower (vakau).
Vinusak – jungle flowers.
Vinusak Kapok – like a kapok flower
This traditional attire is produced traditionally wholly by hand weaving called magavot using cotton known as kapok by the local residents. This weaving portrays its high traditional value based on the technic of making and decorative motifs produced with elements of animal shape, human, armament and plants. The weaving process is the same as the weaving process of other traditional materials found in Sabah, that is using the weaving equipment Kek Sandang Belakang, called babaal in the Rungus dialect.
