Introduction and history
Dusun Tinagas is one of the tribes of the Kadazandusun ethnic in Sabah. The name Dusun Tinagas (Nagas) is derived from the name of a wide area of rocks at the estuary of the Sugut River.
The tribe’s traditional attire is Lapoi Rininggitan, of which Lapoi is the woven material using plant fibres like banana and pineapple. The attire is adorned with various accessories like Timbok for the head while for the neck area is a necklace called Sinandang Pino’og, Sinandang Nulang-ulang, Sinandang Pinorunduk, Sinandang Ganggalung, and Sinandang Dumpong or Dalai. At the waist is Toorot Rinagang and Sinsing, while for the hand is Golong that is bracelet.
This attire has its own uniqueness like the design in Lapoi and Tapi. Among the designs are Balasu that is a white line and Kasumba, a red line. Every design has its own meaning. For example, the Nundaloh design refers to this tribe’s ‘fishing equipment’. The Sinorosipon design is shaped like the teeth of a saw meaning ‘a symbol of building and erecting a house’.
There is also the Tinubou-tubou design meaning ‘traditional tool or game’. Tinukad-tukad means ‘house staircase’ that refers to ‘the symbol of strength and unity of the Dusun Tinagas community’. Lastly, the Tiang design that is a house pillar design that ‘holds the law and customs’ of this tribe.
