Introduction and history
The Murut Tahol tribe resides in the Kemabong Sub-District of Tenom District. Their traditional attire is Simbah Kulilif Tapih Malindon worn by the ladies.
Among the accessories of this attire is Lumpirot that is belt made of silver coins, and pipirot linggit decorated with various beads called aki-aki, nampalur, kotos, bungkas, aki’ and olod.
The Saliwot accessory is a three-set hair pin decorated with sinikot tataun in the middle and two sinikot surai at both hair buns. Saliwot tataun has a long string and decorated with beads. Sapulu is also a headwear decorated with beads.
The necklace accessory is called Sisigot comprising of a variety of beads, among them bungkas, kotos, aki’ pangungupu, bulul, and olod. There are also pairs of bracelets called Holong made from giant clam’s shell, holong sulou. Other accessories are, among them, Suol, Bilong, Sulampoi, Sulou, Inafit, and Tiniwak. Most of the accessories are obtained from sea creatures and hand-woven.
This attire uses red cloth to cover the chest area, entwined from the chest to the waist. This cloth is paired with sarong called Tapih Malindon that has decorative beads designs signifying flowers or plants. Every bead design has its own meaning and the accessories too that portray the tribe’s high creativity.
These traditional designs can’t be worn indiscriminately as every design has its own meaning that shows self-identity. Among the designs and their meanings are:
Lumayau Sinampipin – ‘Travelling to the neighbouring village’
Nahulalan – ‘Warrior’
Pinandayun – ‘Joint’
Lumayau Sinimpung – ‘Migrate and return back’
Nambuyunan – ‘Non-ending resulting in becoming less sane’
Nilikar – ‘Meet and depart’
Nansingap – ‘A non-expected meeting
This traditional attire has its own abstention. In yesteryears, young women were not encouraged to wear this attire, only the elderlies. A Sogit (fine) of a chicken is imposed if were to borrow the attire. This attire can only be worn during certain events like in enquiring (soliciting a girl) for marriage, requesting the girl’s hand in marriage, wedding and playing the lansaran (trampoline) game.
This attire cannot be worn if there was a death. If the deceased has a high status in the community or wealthy, all the highly valuable accessories that he owned are placed next to his corpse to show his assets.
This tribe also believe that these accessories have soul as it can cure the wearer if he were to experience exhortation due to a breach of the abstention.
