Introduction and history

According to history, the name Selako is derived from the name of the Selakau or Selako River. Once before this tribe settled at Gajing Mountain, nearby Selakau or Selako River in Singkawang, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Around the year 1800 they migrated to Sarawak and settled around Pasir River and Kayan River.

Selako is a minority tribe in Sarawak and one of the fractions of the Bidayuh ethnic. They settled in Lundu around the Sematan Sub-District.

The Selako tribe consists of two clusters that are Sangkuku Selako and Gajekng Selako, but they still maintain as the Selako tribe. They are only differentiated by various ritual presentations, food prohibition and history of origin only, but their traditional costume is still the same.

The Selako community hold on to the sam-sam (curfew) practice in the village for generations. Before, this practice was compulsory to be adhered and those against were sentenced in accordance with their village custom.

Traditional Attire/ Accessories

Male Costume:

There are two simple male traditional costumes that do not require plenty decorations. They normally wear black trousers, black shirt decorated with yellow and red laces, red shawl and also a hat as head decoration. There are also who prefer adorning simple attire like wearing a shirt with vest on the outside, long black trousers, a necklace of wild animal’s teeth and hat.

Female Costume:

There are two types of traditional blouse for women; short sleeve and half sleeve. It is similar to the traditional blouse of the Bidayuh ethnic but white in colour. The blouse is matched with a knee-high black sarong decorated with laces, coins, copper bells and fine beads in white, yellow and red.

There are seven basic decorations that are:

  • Manibi: Head decoration. Adorn around the forehead and wrapped around the head. It is easy to wear, just ensure the manibi encircles the forehead to the back.

  • Topongk:  A comb that adorns the head around the manibi’s back and worn by poking only. This decoration is to increase the glow at the head.

  • Salindang: A shawl placed on the right shoulder and pinned at the left waist.

  • Rante/Marek: Neck chain with its dangle at the back position.

  • Timo: Waist bead encircling the waist and covering the white blouse’s ends. The beads need to be in the middle of the waist and pinned till covering the lower blouse.

  • Chuak Paha: Belt.

  • Chuak Tangan or Ga’angk: Bracelet.
