Introduction and history

Kadazan is one of the biggest ethnics in Sabah and reside in the Penampang District, and have their own traditional costume too.

Functions and Roles

Traditional Attire/ Accessories

The men usually wear long sleeve shirt that shows influence of Chinese attire. The shirt is called Gaung and paired with trousers called Souva.

Gaung is made of black velvet cloth and decorated with golden thread and beads called linda (lace), as well as completed with silver and golden buttons called labuan.

Souva is also made of black velvet cloth. The top part of the trousers is joint with white cloth called tepua.

The Kadazan men also wear headwear called sigah made from dastar cloth weaved using golden thread and thread of various colours.

Additional decoration is tabot that is belt made from cloth and is usually black.

The sandongan or sandang decoration is shawl placed on the shoulder especially during doing the Sumazau performance. Sandang is made from a plant like screw pine called hisad and whittled to about five millimetre in size. In yester years, sandang was used to hang human skull of enemies successfully beheaded by heroes during battle and kept or hung on the house’s ceiling.

The Kadazan community use commercial black fabric of velvet or silk for certain ceremonies and cotton cloth for everyday usage. The colour black was mostly used in yester years as the original residents of this state depended on a number of plants only to be made into cloth dipping liquid

Method / Preparation Method / Presentation Method

Sigah is folded or entwined on the head in a number of special styles that are hinopung or hopung (python), spiral kinahu or kahu (pot holder), folded sinimbitan and tinahanuk (that is a small part of the side jutted out). Tupi sinikat or a round hat made from strong rope with tie and swirl technique is used to strengthen the sigah.

The main stitch of this attire is sinusuk bulus that is chain stitch, and tantop that is fur stitch. The fur stitch technique is also used to make binuunsi, that is red and yellow stripes woven like shoe lace. The decoration and embroidery on this traditional costume is average compared to the costumes of other ethnics in Sabah.
