Introduction and history

Kanjet Ngeleput is a dance that portrays the joyous atmosphere of the Orang Ulu community during a hunting trip combined with a picnic in the forest. While waiting for the hunters to return with their catch, the community would entertain themselves by dancing to the melodic tunes of the Sape. The Sape, a traditional musical instrument among the Orang Ulu, is crafted from wood that is readily available in the vicinity of their settlements.

Functions and Roles

-

In this dance, the dancers are fully dressed as warriors, wearing attire made from animal skins. The costume is complemented with a hat adorned with colourful beads and hornbill feathers, a machete, a quiver tied at the waist, and a blowpipe held in hand.

Equipment/ Ingredients

-

Method / Preparation Method / Presentation Method

This dance was introduced around 1985 by the Cultural Group of the Sarawak State Ministry of Social Development. Originally, the dance was a reimagined choreography created to diversify the types of Orang Ulu dances in Sarawak. The original dance was designed by Cik Uli Bilong, a cultural expert for the Orang Ulu ethnic group, while the choreography was arranged by Encik Affendi Sebli. The dance showcases agile yet silent movements, mimicking the behaviours of hunters in the forest. Upon spotting their target, the dancer mimics the act of using a blowpipe, with the "shot" rarely missing its mark. Today, the dance has been revitalized with modern elements, which have significantly altered its original structure. Kanjet Ngeleput is now performed in various unique versions tailored to suit different types of performances.
