Introduction and history

In the life of the Malay community, particularly among fishing communities, self-preparation for going to sea is a process that involves crucial spiritual, physical, and social aspects. The sea is not only a source of livelihood but also a place filled with challenges and dangers. Therefore, traditional customs and self-preparation before setting out to sea are highly emphasized to ensure safety, success in earning a living, and personal well-being.

Functions and Roles

Seeking Protection and Blessings

Spiritual Function: One of the primary functions of this tradition is to seek protection and blessings from God as well as the spirits of the sea. Through prayers, recitations of the Quran, and offerings, fishermen hope to be safeguarded from danger and achieve a good catch. This tradition forms the foundation of the belief that the universe and the sea are realms filled with powerful forces and spirits that must be respected.

Protection from Sea Hazards: The sea is a high-risk environment for fishermen. Therefore, traditional customs involving prayers and rituals aim to provide protection from threats such as storms, large waves, or accidents while at sea. This tradition serves as a reminder to fishermen that they do not rely solely on physical strength but also on spiritual protection.

Inspection of Boats and Fishing Equipment

Before setting out to sea, fishermen will inspect their boats and fishing gear, such as nets, trawls, and other equipment, to ensure everything is in good condition and ready for use. This is an essential practical step to ensure a smooth fishing trip and operation.

Wearing Appropriate Clothing

Fishermen wear suitable attire for going to sea. This clothing is usually designed for ease of movement and comfort, carefully selected for practicality. Some fishermen also wear protective gear such as life jackets or hats to shield themselves from extreme weather conditions, such as intense heat or rain.

Food and Drink Preparation

Before departing, fishermen ensure they bring enough food and water supplies. This is crucial as they will spend long hours at sea and need to maintain their energy throughout the trip. The food carried is usually long-lasting and easy to prepare on the boat.

Method / Preparation Method / Presentation Method

Spiritual Preparation (Prayers and Quran Recitations)

Before setting out to sea, fishermen begin their preparations by performing specific prayers and reciting verses from the Quran. These prayers are meant to seek protection from God, ensuring a safe and blessed journey. Recitations such as Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas, which seek refuge from all forms of harm and disturbances, are commonly practiced.

Purification Rituals

Some Malay communities also conduct purification rituals, such as ritual bathing (mandi sunat or mandi bunga), which is believed to cleanse the body and soul from negative elements while bringing blessings before heading to sea. Mandi bunga (flower bath) is also regarded as a way to attract good fortune and divine protection.

Offerings to the Sea

Before a boat is launched or used, offerings in the form of food or drinks are prepared as a symbolic tribute to the spirits of the sea. These offerings serve as a sign of respect for the sea, which provides sustenance to the fishermen. They typically include easily accessible items such as rice, fruits, and flowers. A portion of these offerings is often cast into the sea as a symbolic request for abundant catches and safe passage.

The Departure Process to Sea

Before setting sail, fishermen usually offer another prayer to seek protection and blessings from God. This prayer is accompanied by hopes for a safe journey and a bountiful catch.

Greeting and Handshakes

As a sign of respect, fishermen bid farewell to their families and friends, exchanging greetings and handshakes before departure. This practice not only strengthens community bonds but also symbolizes a spirit of cooperation and mutual support.

Carefully Launching the Boat

The process of launching the boat into the sea is carried out with great caution. Fishermen ensure that the boat is stable and safe before beginning their journey. The boat is usually lowered using ropes or wooden planks to prevent damage or accidents.
