Introduction and history

Kercang is a Malay traditional game played using an object called kercang.  The kercang is made of coils of rattan arranged in various shapes. In the past, the game was played by the Orang Asli (Jakun ethnic group) and Malays in the interior of the Endau Forest.

Functions and Roles

Kercang game functions as entertainment for their visitors.  It is always played by the Jakun tribe for their visitors, competitions and yearly festivals.

Method / Preparation Method / Presentation Method

The philosophy of kercang is to test one’s mind to find one’s way back if lost in jungles or forests. The arrangement of the rattan represents forest valleys, gorges, hills and ranges.  The winner of the game is the fastest player freeing the rope stuck in the middle of the kercang.
