Introduction and history

Berendoi or the rocking cradle ceremony is an Islamic cultural practice involving at least four people who chant or sing during the bercukur (shaving) ceremony of a seven-day-old baby. Berendoi comes from the word endoi in the Perlis Malay dialect, meaning a cradle used to lull a baby or child to sleep. This tradition is a symbol of the family’s gratitude for the birth of a child. Typically, the cradle (endoi) used for the ceremony is beautifully decorated, and the baby, whose hair has been shaved, is placed inside it. After that, the berendoi song begins, praising the Prophet Muhammad or offering advice, encouragement, and moral lessons, with the hope that these elements will be instilled in the baby being rocked. Each song consists of four verses, in the form of syair (traditional poetry), such as:

“We begin with Bismillah,

Mentioning Alhamdulillah,

Praying for blessings from Allah,

And the intercession of Rasulullah.”
