Introduction and history
This example of the Beketan or Baketan costume is taken from the Beketan tribe at Rumah Rajau, Sungai Metah, Belaga.
A group of Baketans headed by a woman named Sagah left Palin in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, migrated to Batang Maloh (or Kanyau). After a while they moved to a number of places until they reached Sungai Nangka, opposite Nanga Arai and settled there.
Then later they were attacked by Iban fighters headed by a warrior named Bekatang from Machan from the Rejang River. A number of Baketan warriors were killed and, as a consequence of this mass killing, the Baketans moved upstream of the Rejang River to settle with their relatives and friends at Pala Wong.
They then moved again to a number of places until they reached Merit under the leadership of their leader, Meru, who died in 1966.
Traditional Costume:
The Beketan costume has slight similarity with other costumes of other tribes but of different names. The beauty of this costume is its decoration that exhibits the hand craft expertise in its production. The décor in the form of the tribe’s motifs is found on the attire, as well as on the beads and sequin embroidery.
Self adornment like gold, silver and copper are status and wealth symbols of affordable families.
