Introduction and history

Zapin originated from the Zafana dance tradition of the Arabs from Hadramaut, South Arabia, brought to Malaysia through migration from Hadramaut. Through the process of Malay adaptation, Zapin Melayu refined its movements to align with the aesthetics of Southeast Asian culture. Consequently, five types of zapin dances emerged in Sarawak due to migration to the Borneo Archipelago: Sebat, Simanggang, Saratok, Sindang, and Kuching.

The dance is believed to have been created by the late Pak Baie Drahman, who was born in 1921 in Kampung Sebat Melayu. He began engaging in Malay cultural activities at the age of 20.

Tracing the history of zapin in Sarawak, two forms of Sarawakian zapin are still known and performed today. One of them is Zapin Sebat, founded by the late Baiee Drahman from Kampung Sebat Melayu in Sematan. Zapin Sebat originates from Kampung Sebat, a small district in Sematan, Lundu. This Sarawak Malay dance is choreographed with 11 distinctive movement patterns while retaining its fundamental steps: Sembah Mula, Mula Langkah, Mula Langkah Pusing, Mabuk Kemenyan, Langkah Tiga, Tumpah Madu, Bermain Gelombang, Meniti Gigi Air, Gigit Lembadak, Berdayung, and Langkah Sebaya.

The dance features controlled, flowing movements that mimic the gentle waves of the sea and is traditionally performed during the bride’s malam berinai (henna night) before the wedding ceremony. Today, this dance is showcased during weddings, official events, and stage performances.
