Introduction and history

The word indu, pronounced as induk, means "woman" in the Iban language. Thus, Ngajat Indu is a type of dance performed exclusively by women from the Iban ethnic group. The primary elements of this dance highlight the gracefulness and elegance of Iban women while clearly showcasing the refined artistry, cultural heritage, and traditions of this indigenous community.

Functions and Roles

The dance movements of Ngajat Indu are rich with meaning and symbolic messages, often reflecting the daily activities of the Iban community through each step. Notably, the movements are inspired by the art of weaving pua kumbu, a traditional woven textile that is a significant cultural heritage of the Iban people. Weaving pua kumbu is a skill and expertise deeply valued among Iban women.

This dance is typically performed during the Gawai celebrations and cultural events in Sarawak. It is often interwoven with the Ngajat Lesung dance, which is performed by men, adding a dynamic element to the overall presentation.
