Introduction and history
Adat Baraan is a Javanese tradition in Johor involving group visitation, especially during Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations. This communal activity often includes recitations of selawat (praises upon Prophet Muhammad) and prayers to invoke blessings for the host.
The term baraan originates from the Javanese language, meaning "to wander" or "to visit in groups." This practice is believed to have been introduced by Javanese migrants to the Malay Peninsula and has since been maintained as part of their cultural heritage.
Baraan functions as a medium to strengthen social bonds among family members, neighbours, and the local community. By visiting houses in groups, it reinforces kinship and nurtures a sense of togetherness within the community. Additionally, it aligns with Islamic teachings that encourage spreading greetings and maintaining familial and social ties.
During baraan, participants typically wear traditional attire such as baju Melayu for men and baju kurung or kebaya for women. These outfits reflect cultural identity and enhance the festive atmosphere of the visitations. Additional accessories, like songkok for men and selendang for women, complement the traditional look.
No specific equipment is required for baraan. However, hosts often prepare traditional dishes to welcome and treat visiting guests. Common offerings include:
Ketupat
Rendang
Traditional Kuih-Muih (Pastries)
Beverages
These dishes serve as tokens of appreciation and a means to celebrate the guests’ presence.
Planning:
The baraan group is organised, typically comprising family members, neighbours, or friends.
A list of houses to be visited is prepared in advance to ensure a smooth flow.
Execution:
The group moves systematically from one house to another.
At each house, they exchange greetings, seek forgiveness, and enjoy the prepared refreshments.
Closure:
After completing all visits, the group regathers and concludes the activity with expressions of gratitude and prayers.
While no specific individual is directly associated with the origin of Adat Baraan, the Javanese community in Johor collectively preserves and practices this tradition, demonstrating a shared commitment to cultural heritage.
This custom has garnered interest in cultural studies and is often discussed in the context of preserving the Javanese identity within Malaysia. Its continuity signifies the resilience of community-led traditions in maintaining ancestral practices amidst modern societal changes.
