Introduction and history
Gordang Sembilan is one of the branches of musical art that was introduced and became popular in the state of Selangor starting around the 1980s.
Ceremonial and Ritual Purposes: Gordang Sambilan is used in traditional ceremonies such as weddings, Quran completion ceremonies, and inaugurations to accompany the customs of the Mandailing community.
Strengthening Identity and Culture: Gordang Sambilan performances strengthen the identity and cultural heritage of the Mandailing community, serving as a symbol of unity and pride.
Entertainment and Performing Arts: Beyond its ritual functions, Gordang Sambilan is also played for entertainment at various cultural events, showcasing traditional arts and musical skills passed down through generations.
Traditional musicians' attire typically consists of Baju Melayu or Baju Kurung, paired with a samping, songkok or headscarves, and batik/songket fabric as an additional decorative element.
Here are the musical instruments used in Gordang Sambilan:
Gordang: A set of nine main gendang of various sizes.
Serunai: A blowing instrument used for melody.
Tali-tali: Additional gendang for complementary rhythms.
Gong: A large metal instrument for a rhythmic beat.
Usually, this instrument is played by 10 people, with the main instrument being nine large and long gendang, in addition to side instruments such as gong, cak lempong, sesayak and flute. Generally, Gordang Sembilan is played in official state government ceremonies, palace customs, mourning ceremonies (due to grief), thanksgiving and wedding ceremonies. The rhythm and sound based on gendang musical instruments by beating the gendang is the voice of nature. Generally, every rhythm that is produced is chosen by the players until they signal to stop playing.
