Introduction and history

Caklempong is folk music of the Minangkabau community. It was brought to Malaya by the Minangkabaus of the West Sumatra, Indonesia, who settled in Negeri Sembilan in the 14th century.

In the Minangkabau dialect, caklempong is taklempong, a traditional musical instrument from the idiophone family that uses a diatonic scale. 'Cak' is the sound of the drumbeats while 'lempong' is the sound of the bonang (gong) beats.

In the past, caklempong was so important that apart from entertaining, it captured the audience so profoundly that they became united, benefitting the community at large.

To begin with, there were five caklempong tones: do, re, mi, so and la. However, in 1970, the caklempong was developed into six tones: do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, and do.

Functions and Roles

This music is performed at government ceremonies, official events and folk festivals.

This exceptional traditional caklempong should be preserved as the cultural heritage of Negeri Sembilan and be exposed internationally, for the pleasure of the world.

EQUIPMENT TO PLAY

To play caklempong one needs the following instruments:

Gereteh is made of 24 small gongs called ’bonang’, placed horizontally on a specially-made place called tepak.   It plays two tunes which are melodies I and II.

• Tingkah

Twelve other bonang, arranged horrizontally, playing the codes.

• Sauwa/sawo

The sauwa/sawo, another 12 bonang, arranged horizontally, play the melodic ostinato.

• Canang

Twelve bonang playing the bass beats.

The bonang gereteh, beinha, saua and canang are made of copper. They are the idiophones, tapped with a wrapped wooden drum mallet. The  other musical instruments often played along to enrich the caklempong tunes are drums, gongs, flutes and bangsi.
