Introduction and history
Muzik Asli is melancholic, melodious or sad music. Having a slow tempo; its melody is equally slow and soft. Their lyrics are usually historic events rhymes such as Seri Mersing, Siti Payung and Laksamana Mati Dibunuh. There are also about love and passion such as Selasihku Sayang and Gurindam Jiwa.
Singing them, a violin is the most important, followed by a rebana as background music. Lagu asli are not easy to sing as they require strong voice control, singing and breathing techniques. Their lyrics are in prose and verses to convey the message and gist of the song.
At present, lagu asli Terengganu is played on the radio and television to denote their heritage song programme. In Terengganu, there is a rise of arts performance and singing competitions, a part of arts activities in the state. Thus the lagu asli is sung more actively, in tandem with this upsurge.
Puan Hafsah binti Khatib Jusoh, better known as Ma Hafsah, is the pride of Terengganu as she won multiple singing competitions, especially in the lagu asli category at the regional, state and national levels. Puan Hafsah has been singing since 1957.

• Champion of the RTM East Coast P. Ramlee Song Competition (2000)
• Champion of Lagu Asli of MAKSAK Malaysia, Melaka (2001)
• Performed at the Night of Honoring HRH the Sultanah of Terengganu (2001)
• Performed at the Dance Festival (2002-2003).
Her popular song, Selasihku Sayang, was adapted to a television drama. Her CD album, Dendang Rakyat Terengganu, contains Terengganu folk songs as follow:
• Ulik Mayang,
• Anak Udang,
• Anak Burung Baniong,
• Itik Gembo-Gembo and
• Ayun Buai Kokek.
Among her students are Mohd Edy Nazren Hamzah and Mohd Najib Hamzah (Winner of the Bintang Asli Remaja Kebangsaan) and her son, Kuna.
