Introduction and history

The Dusun Tobilung tribe is one of the tribes in the districts of Kota Belud, Kota Marudu and Kudat. Their women’s traditional costume is Sinurangga and Tabot.

Traditional Attire/ Accessories

Sinurangga has a number of parts like Tapi Sinulatan that is a skirt decorated with sulat so as to look attractive.

Sunduk is head accessory as scarf. Sunduk has bells called giring at the lower part and is also decorated with sulat at its side. Binolit is an accessory for the waist, made of beads of various sizes and colour. At the lower part of Binolit is Giring that is bells aimed at producing rhythmic sound when the wearer is moving.

Sinurangga is also completed with waist accessory called Sinsing, made from copper, in two sizes of big and small. Sinsing can also be made as a signage to the girl chosen by a man in wedding custom. Siin, made of silver coins is one of the waist accessories worn below the sinsing.

The beauty and uniqueness of Sinurangga can be seen by the accessories like Bontuk, Saring, Lungkaki and Sumpak. Bontuk is a white bracelet worn on both hands, made from sharpened sea snail. According to belief, Bontuk is said to be able to heal illness like skin rashes. This tribe produces the medicine by sharpening and dipping Bontuk into water which will be rubbed on the rashes for healing purposes.

Saring is bracelet made of copper. Lungkaki and Sumpak are made from copper too and are anklets. The difference between Lungkaki and Sumpak is the size; Lungkaki is much bigger and not exceeding 5kg in weight according to the wearer’s preference, while Sumpak is small. Both these anklets are worn together so that they can produce shrill sound when the wearer is moving.

There is also Sulat decoration that is hand embroidery made according to motif and pattern. It is normally embroidered using cotton thread of various colours. The motif and pattern of Sulat are elements of plants, animals and shape. The following are the types of Sulat of this traditional costume:

Method / Preparation Method / Presentation Method

Sinurangga is made from woven cotton material and dyed in black colour, and then cut according to the body size of the wearer. The decorative motifs of sulat and langkit aim to show the attire’s beauty so that it looks attractive. These motifs are based on the creativity of the seamstress according to the patterns of flora and fauna.

The attire’s decoration is called Langkit, that is the tribe’s woven product since long time ago. The technique of producing this handicraft is called ‘tying and hooking the thread (crochet)’ done alternately. Normally, the production of Langkit is done by the women by using needle and cotton thread of various colours. The choice of thread colour is based on the motif and pattern with elements of shape, animals and plants. The types of Tobilung Langkit are Langkit Kinulampung, Langkit Ginuntiyow, Langkit Kinilong, Langkit Sumbit Walu, and Langkit Sinusuk Rabung.
