Introduction and history

The Gendang Perlis, often performed during wedding ceremonies or festive occasions, was originally used as a drum accompaniment for silat performances during Temasya Laga Kerbau (bull-fighting festivals) in the reign of Tuanku Raja Syed Syaffi (1897–1905) and Tuanku Raja Syed Alwi (1905–1943). At that time, the festival was a popular form of entertainment for both the people and the royal court.

Functions and Roles

Previously: Played during bull-fighting festivals.

Currently: Accompanies two silat performers who combine silat movements with humor and storytelling.

Traditional Attire/ Accessories

Previously: Attire included baju pagoda (a traditional undershirt), kain pelikat (sarong), and a headscarf.

Currently: Performers wear Baju Melayu and songkok for formal events, and casual t-shirts for informal occasions.

Equipment/ Ingredients

The drummers’ platforms (ran or hang) were usually built in trees.

Gendang Perlis does not use the serunai.

Two drummers play the gendang ibu and gendang penganak using curved wooden sticks. The drums are smaller than silat drums.

Method / Preparation Method / Presentation Method

Drums are played in rhythm to mark the start of bull-fighting festivals.

As the fight intensifies, the drumming accelerates to energize the audience and rally their support.
