Introduction and history

Rejang Be'uh is a traditional dance of the Bidayuh ethnic group, typically performed after the harvest season as an expression of joy, celebration, and communal entertainment for guests of the longhouse. This dance narrates the story of a Bidayuh hero named Madu Ujong, who was tasked by Raja Bintang to battle a legendary celestial bird known as Tingkilang Raman. His victory over this mythical bird would grant him the honour of marrying the king's daughter, Dara Buda.

The Rejang Be'uh dance is typically performed by two male dancers, with their arms extended to mimic the movements of an eagle. They dance to the rhythm of drums and gongs, accompanied by the jingling of small bells tied around their ankles.

The choreography in this dance represents the movements of Madu Ujong and Tingkilang Raman as they engage in battle, striving to defeat one another. These two principal dancers start from opposite ends of the veranda and move toward each other in various dynamic styles. Each time they meet, they perform a swooping formation, imitating a rapid dive with their heads leading downward, as if attacking their opponent.
