Introduction and history

Kuih Karas is made from rice flour. It has a fine, net-like texture, similar to vermicelli but crispy and sweet in taste. This traditional snack is made by mixing a thin rice flour batter that is then poured into hot oil using a special mold until golden yellow. It is then lifted and folded. Kuih Karas is very popular among the people in the Kota Setar district of Kedah.

In Kedah, this snack is often served at festive occasions such as Hari Raya and wedding feasts. The uniqueness of Kuih Karas lies in its sweet taste and crispy texture, making it a widely loved treat.

1 packet (500g) rice flour

1 cup sugar

1 1/2 cups water


Method / Preparation Method / Presentation Method

Here are the steps to prepare Kuih Karas:


1) Cook the sugar until it becomes a sweet syrup.

2) Mix the syrup with the rice flour and pour it into a roti jala mold.

3) Heat the oil and pour the mixture from the side of the pan. Ensure the strands are not too thick.

4) Fold the strands into a triangular shape. This kuih only needs 2-3 minutes to cook over the heat.
