Introduction and history
Surveying or "meninjau" is the first step in the Malay community's marriage custom. This situation used to happen when the man's parents had difficulty finding a suitable daughter-in-law for their child, because at that time girls were rarely allowed to leave the house without an important reason (Archive 2007/0052679). Therefore, the parents of the boys will ask for the help of respected elders in the village, whether male or female, to get information about girls in the village or nearby villages who are suitable to be daughters-in-law. Usually, the parents of the boys will also ask their relatives to get information about the girls they consider suitable for pairing with their sons.
The main purpose of this custom of surveying is to ensure that the girl whom the man is interested in is not yet engaged, because in Islam, it is forbidden to propose to someone else's fiancé. In addition, this custom also aims to research the girl's background in depth, including lineage, behaviour, manners, and character, after they are attracted by the girl's appearance.
This surveying custom is a visit from the male side to the prospective daughter-in-law's house. When the representative of the male side arrives at the prospective daughter-in-law's house, usually a conversation is started about life, work, or current issues while enjoying the feast served by the girl. When the girl serves the food, the male representative will have the opportunity to see her face. After that, the conversation will be directed to the real purpose of their arrival.
After the experienced representatives make observations and assess whether the girl is suitable for the male side, they will convey their views to the male side's parents. If the parents agree with the girl's personality, then their son is asked to see his future wife for himself.
After being satisfied with the girl's appearance, the man will inform his parents of his consent to accept the girl as his mate.
