Introduction and history
Chinese society puts family first because they see it as a way to continue the bloodline. Continuity of descent is considered important to maintain the survival of the nation. Various customs and taboos are practiced during pregnancy and birth to ensure that the unborn baby is spared from bad events such as miscarriage, disability, or death. Pregnant women are always strictly controlled in their daily actions and activities. Chinese society also highly values sons, because they can continue the lineage and inherit the family name. Daughters, on the other hand, are considered temporary property of their parents and upon marriage, they become part of the husband's family.
Restoring the mother's health – The abstinence period helps the mother recover after giving birth with rest and special nutrition.
Avoiding long-term illness – Abstinence is believed to prevent the mother from health problems such as headaches or body weakness in the future.
Protecting babies – Abstinence practices protect babies from disease and danger with careful care.
Strengthen family ties – Family members, especially mothers or in-laws, help take care of mothers and babies, strengthening family ties.
Defending cultural traditions - Refraining from continuing customs that have been passed down from generation to generation, safeguarding cultural heritage.
Encouraging nutrition and traditional treatment – Nutritious nutrition and traditional herbal ingredients are used to speed up the mother's recovery.
Stabilize the mother's emotions – Abstinence ensures that the mother gets enough rest to stabilize her emotions and avoid postpartum depression.
The preparation of food during the confinement period in Chinese society is very important to take care of the mother's health and recovery after childbirth. The food provided during abstinence is specifically intended to restore energy, warm the body, and improve blood circulation. Here are some common food preparation methods during abstinence:
1. Boil with Herbs
Method: Food, such as soup, is boiled with Chinese herbs such as ginseng and goji. The boiling process is carried out slowly so that the herbs are fully absorbed.
Purpose: Strengthen internal energy, improve blood circulation, and restore mother's health.
2. Steaming
Method: Food is steamed to preserve its nutrients without using oil or strong spices.
Purpose: To ensure that mothers get nutritious food that is easy to digest.
3. Cooking with Ginger and Wine
Method: Ginger is used to expel wind in the body, while cooking wine is used in small amounts to warm the body.
Purpose: To warm up the body and speed up recovery after childbirth.
4. Grilling or Baking
Method: Meat and fish are grilled or baked with a little oil.
Purpose: Provide the protein and healthy fats needed for recovery without overly greasy foods.
5. Sauté with a Little Oil
Method: Vegetables and meat are quickly sautéed with a little oil and ginger.
Purpose: Provide nutritious food that helps warm the body.
6. Avoid Cold Food
Method: Avoid "cold" ingredients such as cucumber or kale in food preparation.
Purpose: Avoid body weakness and speed up recovery with hot or neutral foods.
7. Cooking Nutritious Soup
Method: The soup is boiled for a long time with nutritious ingredients such as chicken bones and herbs.
Purpose: Provides energy, improves milk production, and helps wound healing.
8. Using Sesame Oil
Method: Sesame oil is used in cooking because of its warming properties and high in healthy fats.
Purpose: To warm up the body and increase energy.
* Prohibited Taboos in Abstinent Diet:
Avoiding cold or raw food: Food such as salad or cold fruit is avoided because it is believed to weaken the body.
Avoiding spicy and acidic foods: Foods that are too spicy or acidic can cause discomfort and delay the healing process. Overall, the preparation of food during confinement aims to provide sufficient nutrition, improve blood circulation, and speed up the recovery of the mother's body after childbirth.
