Introduction and history

The Kuda Kepang dance which is often performed in Jalan Parit Deraman, Bukit Kuching Kuala Selangor and Sekinchan, Sungai Besar, Kuala Selangor, is a performance with skilled dancers and is very popular among the Jawa community of Selangor.  


This performance is very popular among the Jawa community in Selangor, with highly skilled dancers. Dancers ride replica horses made of woven bamboo without legs, consisting only of a body, head, and tail. Musical instruments that accompany this dance include gong, bonang, gamelan, rebana, and gendang.


Functions and Roles

Preserving Cultural Heritage: The Kuda Kepang Dance preserves the traditions of the Jawa community in Selangor, connecting the younger generation with the culture of their ancestors.

Strengthening Community Relations: This dance becomes a gathering and social event for the local community, strengthening family ties and neighborhood spirit.

Attracting Cultural Tourism: The Kuda Kepang Dance is an attraction for local and foreign tourists, introducing them to the rich Jawa culture in Malaysia.


Traditional Attire/ Accessories

The following is the clothing style worn by Kuda Kepang dancers:

1. Silat Attire or Traditional Jawa Costume: Dancers wear traditional silat clothes, usually in bright colors such as red, blue, or green, symbolizing strength and spirit.


2. Loose Pants: Paired with loose pants to facilitate movement during the dance.

3. Samping or Waist Cloth: A colorful sampin or waist cloth is used as a waist accessory, adding a traditional element to the attire.

4. Tengkolok or Headband: Dancers wear a tengkolok or headband as a symbol of masculinity and cultural heritage.

5. Additional Accessories: Some dancers wear bracelets or beaded necklaces, adding unique features to their appearance.     


Equipment/ Ingredients

The following is the equipment used in the Kuda Kepang Dance in Jalan Parit Deraman, Bukit Kuching Kuala Selangor, as well as in Sekinchan, Sungai Besar, Kuala Selangor:

1. Kuda Kepang: A replica horse made from woven bamboo, without legs, consisting of the body, head, and tail. Dancers "ride" this replica throughout the performance.

2. Gong: A large metal musical instrument played to mark the tempo and add depth to the rhythm of the performance.

3. Bonang: A metal instrument with several small gongs that produce melodies and enhance the musical harmony.

4. Gamelan: A set of traditional instruments that create melodies and support the main rhythm.

5. Rebana: A percussion instrument played to add rhythmic layers and enliven the atmosphere of the performance.

6. Gendang: A drum that provides the basic rhythm, helping to maintain tempo and synchronize the dancers' movements.
