Introduction and history
Berpukong or Berpokong, is a traditional Malay Banjar custom used to lull babies to sleep. This practice is deeply rooted in cultural and religious values. During Berpukong, the baby is placed in a seated position and securely wrapped in cloth up to the neck while both legs are allowed to dangle freely outside the cradle. As the cradle is gently swung, mothers sing the Lagu Berpukong in the Banjar dialect, interspersing the melody with recitations of blessings (Selawat) upon the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The Lagu Berpukong is a form of oral tradition passed down through generations of the Malay Banjar community. This song is not written in text but preserved through oral transmission, making it a vital element of cultural heritage. Its lyrics reflect the past's lifestyle and serve as a medium to convey praises, aspirations, and prayers. Through this tradition, mothers pray for their children to grow into devout individuals, dutiful to their parents, and beneficial to their community and nation.
Lagu Berpukong holds significant importance in the lives of the Malay Banjar community as an oral cultural heritage rich with moral, religious, and loving values. Its primary functions and roles are as follows:
Function as an Informational Medium
Lagu Berpukong serves as a medium for conveying information, particularly about the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and values inspired by his exemplary character. The lyrics offer guidance and advice on how individuals should behave in daily life, based on Islamic teachings.
Expressive Function
As a poetic form of literature, Lagu Berpukong becomes a means of expressing thoughts, emotions, attitudes, and life experiences of parents. The lyrics reflect deep contemplation on life’s challenges, transformed into meaningful advice and prayers. In this way, the song becomes a medium to convey love and hope for the next generation.
Pedagogical Function
Lagu Berpukong plays an educational role by instilling moral and religious values in children from an early age. The advice in the lyrics emphasizes the importance of adhering to parental guidance, honouring them, and practising Islamic teachings. This helps shape children into individuals of good character and strong faith.
Role in Family Rituals
The song is an oral tradition passed down within Malay Banjar families, sung by mothers or grandmothers to their children or grandchildren as they lull them to sleep. This activity is accompanied by affectionate gestures, such as gentle patting or stroking of the child’s back and head. This role strengthens the emotional bond between parents and children while creating a calming and comforting atmosphere before bedtime.
Role as a Cultural Heritage
Lagu Berpukong symbolizes the cultural identity of the Banjar community, preserving traditional and religious values passed down through generations. As an oral tradition, it reinforces a sense of togetherness within families and the community, ensuring that this cultural heritage remains alive for future generations.
This performing art does not have any specific attire or costume associated with its practice. However, during formal events or Berpukong ceremonies, the Pendendang (singers) of Lagu Berpukong typically wear uniformed attire such as Baju Kurung or long robes (Jubah) in matching tones to reflect a cohesive and respectful appearance.
Lagu Berpukong does not involve the use of musical instruments. Instead, the performers sing collectively, led by a chief singer (ketua pendendang). The chief singer's singing style usually determines the rhythm and duration of the song. Below are the lyrics typically sung during the performance:

The Lagu Berpukong is a traditional melody performed collectively by a group of women during ceremonies involving a newborn baby. The performance is led by a chief singer who begins the song, followed by harmonious responses from the other singers in the group. These singers, all women, usually sit in a line or form a circle, either facing or sitting beside the baby's cradle.
