Introduction and history
Kompang is a traditional drum which is small, light and flat in shape. When played, it is held in one hand and tapped with the other. Kompang Jawa is a traditional Malay (of Jawa descent) drumming music, also known as Kompang Tiga. The difference between kompang jawa and other kompangs are in the tools, beats, rhythms and songs.
Kompang began to be played in the Wali Sembilan era of Jawa Island. Their initial purpose of kompang music was to draw the community’s interest in Islam. The music was then brought to Selangor by Javanese traders in the early 20th century, to be played in mosques, religious ceremonies such as khatam Al-Quran, circumcision, weddings and large-scale events. The commonly played songs are the Assolatu, Bissarri, Ya-Solatun and Sailillah, where the lyrics are in the Maulid Berzanji book.
In these times, kompang Jawa is performed at large events, weddings, and ceremonies having Selangor prominent personalities.
To make a kompang Jawa, one must use halban (vitex pubescences vahl.) wood, cow and goat hide leather, nails (mushroom shape) and velvet cloth.
• The halban wood is the wood of choice due to its long lasting nature. Cut into round flat pieces of the required sizes, they are then carved to make the frame of the drum, called balo. The balo is also sanded thoroughly.
• The goat and cow hide is dried, then shaved smooth.
• Then the hide is tightened around the balo to obtain the shape of a kompang. After gaining the drum shape, the hide is again dried under the sun for at least eight hours.
• The surface of the hide is sanded once more, placed on the balo, then nailed tightly.
