Introduction and history
Tarian Bharatanatyam is a distinguished Tamil traditional dance that originates in Tamil Nadu, India. Meanwhile, the term ‘bharatanatyam’ is a combination of four syllables: ‘bha’ (bhava for expression), ‘ra’ (raga, music), ‘ta’ (tala, rhythm) and ‘natyam’ (dramatic dance art), created by an Indian dance teacher, E. Krishna Iyer, in the mid-1930s. And it was improved by another dance teacher, Rukminidevi Arundale.
Their dance techniques adhere to those mentioned in the text of Natyashastra, the official manual of traditional arts (drama, dance and music) in India, written by Bharata Muni about 2500 years ago.
Historically, bharatanatyam was danced only by temples girls, the devadasi. These girls’ vow was to abstain from marriage for the rest of their lives, and they danced the bharatanatyam in the temple to show their devotion to God.
Tarian Bharatanatyam functions for the Hindu rites and cultural public events organized by the government and private firms.
Dancers wear gorgeous brightly coloured sarees, turning the dance into a splendid display of colours. The dance rings from their 40-bell anklets, the selangai or ghungroos, worn on the left and right legs. They also put on long chains, gold bangles, ear and nose earrings. The matha patti, maang tikka, and jhumar adorn the middle of the head down to the forehead. While a bright pottu or bindi, an essential ornamentation of an Indian lady, delightfully graces the forehead, accompanied by thickly done eyebrows.
HOW TO DANCE
The musical instruments required are dholak, tabla, sitar dan tambura, which are a membranophone. The dholak is a two-face drum. However, the present dancers pre-record their background music.
