Introduction and history
Joget Trila Lila is a Baba Nyonya signature dance in Malacca. The Baba Nyonya are the descendants of the Chinese immigrant traders in Malaya, who later assimilated with the locals through marriage. They are called Baba Nyonya or the Peranakan, living the way of life and culture of the Malays: speaking the language, wearing the baju kebaya and dancing the various dances (Sohaimi et. al, 2017).
Hence, trila lila dance is adapted from Malay dances and called the Baba Nyonya culture, shown by the dialect and props. It is only danced by women (the Nyonya), backed-up by lively songs. Despite the liveliness and gaiety, the dance maintains the decency of the lady dancers. Joget Trila Lila is a community entertainment and widely danced at public events and celebrations, displaying the Baba Nyonya Melaka culture to the world.
Dancers wear pretty and lacy-like embroidered baju kebaya pendek, the traditional wear of Nyonya or Peranakan women in Melaka. The kebaya are usually made of soft cotton material, embroidered delicately with flora and fauna motifs in soft or bold colours. It is worn matched with bright or soft colored batik sarung.
While wearing the kebaya and holding a bimpo or handkerchief, the identity of Baba Nyonya Melaka, a dancer also carries a sia basket, adding to her elegance. Carrying the basket is an assimilation of the Malay culture.
The trila lila dance figure of Malacca is Baba Robert Lim. Born in Melaka, 12 January 1942, he has been involved in Baba Nyonya arts since the 1960’s. Diligent and having to his name extensive experience in the trila lila performance, his heritage organisation is trusted by departments and agencies in the state to hold art performances, and demonstrates Baba Nyonya wedding, traditional cooking, and clothing.
