Introduction and history
Terinai (also spelled Tarinai) is a long-established traditional art form in the state of Perlis. It is typically performed during royal ceremonies, accompanied by the melodies of a seven-holed serunai (six holes on top, one below), a pair of drums struck with braided rattan sticks, and two gongs believed to carry symbolic spiritual elements. Terinai is accompanied by the rhythms of Gendang Terinai or Gendang Keling, with three main songs: Temang Welo (Timang Welu), Selong, and Mak Inang.
• Performed in royal ceremonies.
• Performed at village wedding celebrations.
• Men wear trousers, while women wear sarongs.
• Men pair their attire with songket waistcloths (samping).
• Both men and women wear long-sleeved baju with teluk belanga collars.
• Women wear belts with ornamental pendants (pending), with the belt extending to the front, matching the length of the sarong.
Headpieces:
• Men wear tanjak (traditional Malay headdress).
• Women wear hairpieces, such as cucuk sanggul or sanggul lintang styled like crowns.
Accessories:
• Bracelets are worn by the dancers.
• Betel nut set (tepak sirih).
• Symbolic payment (pengeras).
• Plates.
• Candles.
• Serunai (reed instrument).
• Gendang Terinai/Gendang Keling (traditional drums).
• Gong.
The dance begins with the performers sitting cross-legged. Plates are balanced on the fingertips of all five fingers and swayed gracefully in unique, fluid movements. After performing several variations, the dancers gradually rise to their feet and proceed with steps that align with the meaning of the song being played.
