Introduction and history

This dance is based on a song composed by a songwriter named Cik Lang from Kampung Bukit Kecik, Padang Siding, Perlis. He created the song while soothing a child in a cradle. The song was composed during the period when Perlis was under Siamese rule. Cik Lang was also an active member of the Gendang Terinai group, and this song was often played during Gendang Terinai music performances. In addition to the Cik Lang song, he also composed the song Cik Minah Sayang, named after his wife, Cik Minah.

Performed during rice harvesting festivals.

Traditional Attire/ Accessories

Female dancers: Batik sarong, head covering, and baju kedah (a traditional blouse).

Male dancers: Trousers, a sarong tied around the waist, and a white shirt.

Sickle (linggaman) used for harvesting rice.

The dance movements mimic the act of harvesting rice.

At the end of the performance, the female dancer pulls the male dancer’s ear, making him sit back in his place.
