Introduction and history

Gendang Terinai or Tarinai is one of the traditional musical or artistic forms of Perlis. It is also known as Gendang Keling, believed to be influenced by Indian culture due to the resemblance of the Indian long drum and its serunai (reed instrument).

Functions and Roles

Accompany wedding ceremonies.

Entertain neighbors during merewang (wedding preparations).

Accompany the Tari Terinai.

Now serves as the official musical accompaniment for Royal Ceremonies in Perlis.


Traditional Attire/ Accessories

Baju Melayu or batik.

Songkok (traditional Malay cap).


Equipment/ Ingredients

Serunai (reed instrument).

Two gongs (gong jantan and gong betina).

Long drums (gendang pengibu and gendang penganak).
