Introduction and history

Beduan is the oldest traditional art form in the state of Perlis, recorded to have originated approximately 250 years ago during the Siamese rule. This music was first introduced by two families who sought refuge atop Bukit Tuk Wang Gunung to escape the violence and cruelty of the Siamese army. While on the hilltop, the families, feeling lonely, began striking pieces of wood as drums while singing aloud. After the war ended, the two families returned to their villages and introduced this art form to the villagers. They named the music "Beduan," derived from the word berdua-duaan (being together in pairs).
