Introduction and history
Dried Fish Glutinous Rice (Pulut Ikan Kering) is a popular dish often served as breakfast by the people of Perlis. It is commonly served during feast and community work events. The main ingredients of this traditional dish are glutinous rice, dried fish, and grated coconut. This dish is also known as pulut ikan masin (salty fish glutinous rice) or pulut nyok by the locals. It is a type of plain glutinous rice dish mixed with grated coconut and fried or dried fish.
This dish is very common in rice-farming villages. Besides Perlis and the northern states of Malaysia, Kelantan and Terengganu also serve this dish for breakfast, typically accompanied by a cup of hot "kopi o" (black coffee). It is considered a "village food" that may seem simple but is very filling due to the starch in the glutinous rice.
