Introduction and history

Ngajat Bebunoh is a dance performed by male members of the Iban ethnic group. This dance reenacts or replicates movements that depict situations of facing enemies or engaging in daily activities such as hunting. The dance portrays two Iban warriors duelling in an armed combat to demonstrate their strength and earn status and recognition within the longhouse community. Dressed in traditional attire and armed with parang ilang (traditional swords) and shields, the warriors showcase their skill and agility as they attempt to defeat their opponent.

Functions and Roles

For the Iban people, Ngajat is a dance performed during the Gawai celebrations, as well as before going to war and after the harvest season. In ancient times, this dance was performed upon their return from battle.

Method / Preparation Method / Presentation Method

This dance is performed while standing on a circular platform (langsaran) that moves up and down, with the dancer leaping in time to the accompanying music. Each rhythm played corresponds to the specific ceremony it is part of. For Gawai Sandau Ari, the gendang rayah is played for the honoured guests and the host celebrating Gawai, who dance while carrying the skulls of enemies.

Another variation of this dance involves the dancer holding a wooden shield in the left hand and a sword in the right hand, moving as if confronting an enemy, with their body swaying to the left and right.
