Introduction and history

Rewang, also known as gotong-royong (communal cooperation), is synonymous with the culture of the Javanese community in Johor. This age-old tradition emphasises communal collaboration in preparing for events such as weddings, prayer gatherings, or other celebrations.

Traditionally, rewang involved young individuals competing to become "penanggah" or "kendarat," roles akin to banquet servers. However, these roles have diminished as self-service systems or catering packages with attendants have become common. Rewang activities typically take place on the night before the wedding ceremony, after Isyak prayers or following a khatam Al-Quran or berzanji recital.

Rewang is often complemented by traditional entertainment such as kuda kepang, barongan, joget lambak, karaoke, and communal feasts featuring dishes like sup tulang.

Functions and Roles

Rewang plays a pivotal role in strengthening familial and community bonds. It fosters relationships across generations, genders, and social standings. The tradition serves as a platform for younger generations to learn about cultural values and customs.

In addition, rewang promotes cooperation, responsibility, and tolerance among participants. Traditional performances, such as kuda kepang and barongan, alongside other entertainment like karaoke and homemade fireworks, add cultural vibrancy and joy to the event.

Traditional Attire/ Accessories

Although rewang is not a performing art, participants typically wear practical yet culturally appropriate attire. Men may don traditional baju Melayu or casual t-shirts, while women wear baju kurung or kebaya.

In rewang events that include traditional performances like kuda kepang or joget lambak, performers wear full traditional costumes, such as batik sarongs, traditional blouses, and cultural accessories.
