Introduction and history

The tradition of launching a new fishing net is a traditional ceremony practiced by the Malay community, particularly fishermen, to seek blessings and safety before beginning fishing activities with a new net. This custom is part of the initiation process for the fishing season and plays a crucial role in maintaining a harmonious relationship between fishermen, the sea, and the environment.

Functions and Roles

Seeking Blessings

One of the main purposes of this tradition is to seek blessings from God and the spirits of the sea. Fishermen pray for protection and an abundant catch when using the new fishing net. This practice is a form of supplication, hoping that the harvested seafood brings prosperity and abundance.

Respect for the Sea

The sea is regarded as a source of livelihood and life for fishing communities. Through this tradition, fishermen show respect for the sea and seek to maintain a balanced and harmonious relationship with nature.

Safety and Protection

Additionally, this tradition aims to ensure the safety of fishermen when they go out to sea. They pray for protection from dangers, such as storms, large waves, or accidents while fishing.

Prayers and Quran Recitations

Before lowering the new fishing net into the sea, a community leader or elder usually recites prayers or Quranic verses to seek safety and blessings. These prayers serve to connect the fishermen with God and ask for divine blessings on their efforts at sea.

Offerings (Sesaji)

In many cases, offerings are prepared as a gesture of respect for the sea spirits. These offerings may include food such as rice, fruits, coconuts, and flowers. A portion of these offerings is cast into the sea as a symbolic request for prosperity and safety.

Drumming or Traditional Musical Instruments

At times, traditional musical instruments such as drums (gendang) are played during the ceremony to boost the fishermen’s spirits. The drumming also serves to liven up the atmosphere and is believed to ward off evil spirits that may disturb the fishermen.

Lowering the New Fishing Net into the Sea

After the prayers and offerings are completed, the new fishing net is carefully lowered into the sea. This process involves fishermen gently pulling the net into the water, following a tradition of respect and reverence for the sea.
