Introduction and history

Berendoi is a traditional celebration or custom among the Malay community to welcome the birth of a baby. In other words, berendoi is a ceremony for shaving the baby's hair or topknot, usually when the baby is at least seven days old. Berendoi is also known as the activity of rocking the cradle (adat naik buai), which is done after the baby is carried around a group of marhaban, family, and guests to have its hair shaved. During the berendoi, the marhaban group will recite maulid or maulud, which are religious songs. In Penang, this celebration is also known as Maulud Jawi.

Typically, the berendoi group consists of women from the marhaban and qasidah groups, who will chant praises of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) through religious songs. The lyrics of the berendoi songs also offer advice to the mother and child to live with pure practices and to follow the religious law throughout their lives. The group of singers consists of at least four women or men. In Seberang Perai Utara, Penang, the Naim Hawa group is famous for performing berendoi songs, as well as other religious songs such as Marhaban and Berzanji.

"Ayuhai anak di dalam buaian,
Pejamkan mata jangan tangiskan,
Lagu Berendoi kami dendangkan,
Di dalam majlis tanda kesyukuran."

In the berendoi ceremony, in addition to the hair shaving ritual, tahnik (the act of rubbing a date on the baby's palate) or the opening of the mouth is performed by the father or a religious figure (ustaz) specially invited to the event. This means that in addition to the celebration, the sunnah (tradition) followed from the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is also practiced, as a sign of gratitude for the blessing of a child.

The berendoi ceremony is popular among the northern communities. Besides Penang, Kedah and Perlis also observe similar traditions. Some ancient beliefs suggest that the berendoi ceremony is a vow made by parents for having a child. It is also said that the berendoi is a ceremony to fulfill a vow made after having a son or daughter, as wished. However, at its core, berendoi is closely tied to Islamic teachings, as it conveys messages of guidance, advice, and praises for God.

Functions and Roles

-The hair or topknot shaving ceremony for the baby

-Reciting salawat to celebrate the birth with the hope that the newborn will grow up to be a good person

-The tahnik ceremony or opening the baby's mouth (the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad S.A.W)

Traditional Attire/ Accessories

-Men usually wear the Malay traditional attire, a songkok or white kopiah, while women wear the baju kurung.

-The men will start the ceremony with the recitation of Maulud, followed by the opening of the baby's mouth. The ceremony will then continue with qasidah or berzanji, sung by the women of the marhaban group.

-If only women are present, the opening of the mouth will be performed by an ustaz, the father, or the grandfather of the baby, and the ceremony will proceed with the singing of qasidah and berzanji.

Equipment/ Ingredients

-In the past, the cradle would be hung in the center of the house.

-A jug of water and a betel leaf set would be placed near the baby's cradle.

-Sweets or dates would be used for the opening of the baby's mouth.

-Betel leaves, areca nut, and lime would be provided for the endoi/marhaban group.

-Egg flowers would be given as a token of appreciation from the host to the marhaban group.

Method / Preparation Method / Presentation Method

The baby's cradle is rocked while accompanied by zikr (remembrance of Allah) and praises for the Prophet Muhammad SAW, as well as verses or poetry offering advice.

Tahnik or the opening of the baby's mouth is performed, before the baby's parents carry them around the guests or the marhaban singers to shave the baby's hair or circumcise the baby's hair.
