Introduction and history
Rombak Dapur is a traditional practice in Malay society, specifically related to postpartum care for mothers. It is a ritual performed at the end of the confinement period, which typically lasts between 40 to 45 days. This practice involves the "closing" of the special hearth used for berdiang (warming by the fire) or bersalai (smoke treatment), where embers that have been burning since before the mother gave birth are extinguished.
According to local beliefs, Rombak Dapur is performed on odd days after the confinement period, such as the 39th, 41st, or 43rd day. These odd days are believed to bring good fortune and well-being to the mother and baby. Odd days hold special significance in Malay traditions due to their perceived spiritual importance and blessings.
Rombak Dapur serves as a symbolic closure to the postpartum confinement period for mothers. It signifies that the mother has completed the critical recovery phase and can now return to her normal life. Symbolically, this practice marks the end of a phase in which the warmth of the fire was used to help restore the mother's body and expel wind (gas or air) from her body.
Extinguishing the Embers:
The embers used for warming or smoke treatment are usually placed in a special container beneath a small bed (gerey) where the mother lies. On the selected day, these embers are extinguished as part of the Rombak Dapur ritual. This act symbolizes the end of postpartum care and the conclusion of traditional recovery practices for the mother.
Cleaning the Hearth:
After extinguishing the embers, the hearth used for the fire must be thoroughly cleaned. This task is often carried out by older family members or the midwife (bidan) who cared for the mother during the confinement period.
Expression of Gratitude:
The ritual is accompanied by an expression of gratitude for the successful completion of the confinement period. The hearth is then made available for regular use, marking a return to normal household activities.
