Introduction and history

Kemplingan music is a Jawa heritage in Johore, a gentle drumming melody to complement the rawi recital in a berzanji ceremony, an event praising the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).  Rawi is recited in Arabic, Bahasa Melayu or Jawa.

Functions and Roles

Kemplingan music performance functions as background music to enliven traditional events.  The events are thanksgiving, wedding, baby hair cutting, circumcision and bridal procession.  Its soft and soothing euphony are appropriate sounds to create lasting-impact on the occasions

Equipment/ Ingredients

The instruments required are a drum, jidur, and four kempling to produce different notes.  But, to add to the sweetness and appeal of the sound, the present musicians include a maraca and tambourine.  




The structure of the drum is made from tree stumps such as coconut trunk, jackfruit, ’leban’ or durian.  Ten to twenty musicians play the instruments where some of the musicians recite the rawi or berzanji.

One begins with the drum and jidur beats, followed by the kemplingan. It is a gentle piece of music; a type of down tempo.  While the last beats (the closing), are played much softer with very slow-pace beats and low pitch.
