Introduction and history

The Siamese Long Drum, more commonly known as Theut Theung or Klong Yao, is highly popular among the Siamese community in Perlis. This drum symbolizes the cultural identity of the Siamese people across various aspects of traditional performances, including music, dance, classical dramatic arts, and ceremonies or celebrations. The Siamese occupation of Kedah and its territories in 1821 led to significant cultural assimilation, particularly among the neighboring northern states of Malaysia.

Functions and Roles

The music of the Siamese Long Drum is often performed at celebratory events, such as wedding processions, processions for dignitaries, religious ceremonies, and other occasions.

The songs performed include Loy Khratong, Rambong, Caca, and Lagu Gendang Panjang. For dignitary processions, Loy Khratong and Rambong are often played, while for wedding processions, the preferred songs are Caca and Lagu Gendang Panjang.
