Introduction and history
Sayau Belandaih is one of the traditional dances of the Kadazan-Dusun ethnic community, specifically from the Dusun Tatana sub-ethnic group. This dance is practiced in several villages, including Kayul, Gorowot, Menunggang, and Melampai, within the Kuala Penyu district.
This dance originates from the ritual custom of Moginum, a sacred ceremony aimed at inviting the spirits of ancestors or deceased family members to attend a celebration. Two types of Moginum rituals involve the performance of this dance:
1. Moginum Kaul – This ritual is conducted as part of a vow made for healing purposes, particularly when a family member suffers from an illness attributed to the disturbance of ancestral or deceased family spirits. Referred to as ‘Simponongon’ within the Tatana community, this disturbance is thought to disrupt an individual’s well-being, thereby necessitating restorative measures.
2. Moginum Loyob – this ritual is typically performed to commemorate the spirits of deceased family members. It is typically performed approximately two weeks after a family member’s passing.
The costume associated with this dance, known as Sira Dambia, features a shirt with a pocket decorated with a red handkerchief. This attire is typically complemented by a Sandai, a long shawl elegantly draped diagonally over the shoulders and wrapped around the dancer's body. Completing the ensemble is a Sigar, a traditional headgear or turban tied at the back, with a tail extending downward. Adding to the uniqueness of the performance, the dancers incorporate props such as a Taming (shield), bells, and a pot cover or a metal tray.
This dance is performed to the rhythmic accompaniment of gong beats known as ’Tungkas Kadayan’.
This dance is performed exclusively during the Moginum ceremony by two male dancers. One dancer holds a Taming (shield) and a bell, while the other carries a tray or a pot lid. The choreography features movements that shift fluidly to the left and right, mimicking the sideways motion of a crab.
