Male and female dancers wear costumes made of batik sarongs or sackcloth and don various masks to depict human expressions such as laughter, sadness, joy, and anger. The characters portrayed resemble comedians. Traditionally, this dance was performed to frighten children in the longhouse or to entertain guests with humorous acts during weddings or festive gatherings in the longhouse.
