Introduction and history

Mengarang Indai Abau, also known as Indai Guruk, is a traditional dance of the Iban ethnic group. This dance is typically performed in longhouses, presented in the form of storytelling through oral narration.

Male and female dancers wear costumes made of batik sarongs or sackcloth and don various masks to depict human expressions such as laughter, sadness, joy, and anger. The characters portrayed resemble comedians. Traditionally, this dance was performed to frighten children in the longhouse or to entertain guests with humorous acts during weddings or festive gatherings in the longhouse.
