Introduction and history
Gendang Burdah is a local art form in Sarawak under the category of music, found exclusively in Sri Aman, particularly among the Malay community.
Dikir Burdah was first introduced by an Islamic preacher from the Arab region named Sheikh Hj. Abd. Karim. He was actively involved in spreading the teachings of Islam in Sambas, Pontianak, Indonesia. Through his preaching, he also taught the art of Dikir Burdah to the local community. Initially, Dikir Burdah was only performed in prayer halls while waiting for the Isyak prayer time, which is the interval between the Maghrib prayer and the beginning of Isyak prayer time. Over time, this practice gained the interest of the prayer hall congregants and evolved into a performance and daily activity for the local residents. One of the preacher’s students, Sheikh Haji Abdul Rahman, was responsible for continuing this practice of Dikir Burdah.

This performing art combines singing with the rhythmic beats of drums. Initially, the music and singing of Gendang Burdah were accompanied by dance movements; however, due to the lack of successors who could inherit this tradition, the dance aspect has gradually been abandoned and has since faded.
Burdah is essentially a form of zikir derived from the traditional marhaban and berzanji texts. Accompanied by the music from the drums, the zikir found on a single page of the book is typically sung when the religious teacher and students take a brief break during Islamic studies. The drums used in this zikir come in four different sizes, and their number varies depending on the number of group members, which can range from 15 to 30 people. The songs performed often focus on zikir and praises for the Prophet, such as 'Astaghfir' and 'Mali'. These songs are often enriched with traditional folk songs. However, with the passage of time and modernization, new and contemporary songs have increasingly been incorporated into Gendang Burdah performances today. Up to the present day, the art of Gendang Burdah is frequently showcased during special events such as weddings, thanksgiving ceremonies, baby hair-cutting ceremonies, and receptions for dignitaries.
