Introduction and history

In the past, Tumbuk Kalang was a popular entertainment for rice farmers. The name Tumbuk Kalang comes from a special mortar used to pound young emping padi that are turning yellow. The loud sound produced when pounding emping is made from a mortar lined with banana stems or coconut fronds. The base is known as kalang, and from the activity of pounding emping in a mortar with a kalang base, hence the name Tumbuk Kalang was born. 'Tumbuk Kalang' produces an entertaining rhythm of sound just from the 'spoilt' punching of some antan sticks to a wooden mortar. Famous, especially in Tampin, Inas, Gunung Pasir and Rembau districts, "Tumbuk Kalang" was played by the rice paddy community in ancient times when flaking rice grain, especially at night when the moon was bright. After being tired of harvesting and threshing rice during the day, at night, the village community gathers to flake rice grain while enjoying the rhythm of Tumbuk Kalang. Usually, they rhyme, and the songs that are usually sung are the songs tumbuk emping, kuda berontak, petang-petang and gogar bacang.

Functions and Roles

The Tumbuk Kalang game originally served as entertainment and a way for the rice farming community to rest and celebrate the fruits of their hard work during the harvest season. It is not only a time of relaxation and socializing at night, but also strengthens the relationship in the village community without needing a special place to play. This tradition symbolizes the spirit of togetherness and satisfaction after working in the fields.

However, as time has changed, the function of Tumbuk Kalang has also changed. Now, it is no longer a natural celebration event among rice farmers; instead, it is presented as a cultural heritage in arts and entertainment events. Its original function as community entertainment in the village is still appreciated, but now it aims to preserve and introduce traditions to new generations and a wider audience.

Method / Preparation Method / Presentation Method

The way to knock wooden mortars in the Tumbuk Kalang game varies according to the region. For example, in Gemencheh, "Lagu Kambing Berlaga" is played by an individual using two antan sticks, while in Kuala Pilah, only one antan is used. Antan is a tool used to thresh rice, and each tap on the wooden mallet produces a different sound.

Tapping on the left end of the mortar is known as mencincang, producing a regular and intermittent sound, while tapping on the right end, which is not regular, is known as menganak or meningkah. On the left or right side of the mortar body, there is a beat called mengibu, which is an important beat because it determines the rhythm of the song being played. The last tap is on the hole or edge of the mortar, known as keriket, which serves to embellish the rhythm of the song.
