Introduction and history
Tarian is dance while dabus is a small blade of iron. Hence tarian dabus is a dance using small blades of iron (called anak dabus). Initially this dance was a form of martial arts, but it slowly evolved into performance arts. The dance renders heroism, intellect, agility, valour and bliss, that is one of the Perak traditional dances existing more than 300 years. Blending music, singing, dancing and bravery, tarian dabus is staged and enjoyed at public events.

The arts of dabus now functions as performing arts for the public.
Dancers’ Costume
Dabus dancers wear a warrior type of attire. A male dancer wears a pair of long trousers, a Malay telok belanga top with elbow-length sleeves, a sampin (a knee-length cloth), a tank top and a sash. To look more gallant, the clothing is black, which is also symbolising immunity.
While the female wear a heroine dress, the Acehnese rencong pants, kurung cekak musang, sampin, sash and a bengkung (a broad belt made of cloth), also known as baju Puteri Perak.
Musician's Attire
The musicians wear Malay attire of a sampin, songkok or tengkolok. In the old days, the musicians wore as did the dancers except the sash.
Khalifah’s Attire
Its lead dancer (the khalifah) wears a black shirt, long pants and headband (semutar) or a getam pekasam tie. However, at present the attire has changed to brighter colors.
This traditional dabus game is almost like a ritual, having the elements of hocus pocus (spell). Hence to reinforce the spell, some equipment and materials are required to treat the illness.
Materials
• Incense
• Bertih
• White rice
• Rice flour
• Healing water (to restore)
• Banana stem pulp
Incense
The incense is very important in traditional medicinal ceremonies. It is burned in a special container called a perasap for the smoke. So, the court and anak dabus are smoked with the incense smoke before the dance begins. The dancers too are being smoked before entering the stage.
