Introduction and history
Bapukong was a unique custom of the Banjar community (in the past) to help babies sleep soundly. Traditionally, it was for babies aged between five months and a year.
Bapukong was to ease babies suffering from flatulence, flu, stomachache or fever. Having fallen ill, babies are easily irritable, often crying and need to be cuddled. Thus the bapukong was thought could help mothers handle the babies better.
Batik sarung (a lady’s garment/long skirt usually worn at home) and a baby cradle.
One needs two pieces of batik sarung to execute this custom. The first was made into a cradle and the baby is placed in it in a sitting position. The second cloth is used to wrap around the baby's neck to hold the baby upright. Then, the cradle is swung along lullabies sung in Banjar accent and selawat (salutations to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
