Introduction and history

Tigal Pranuk is a dance that mimics the movements and behaviours of an animal, specifically the mousedeer (kancil). This dance requires physical flexibility and expressive facial movements to portray the sounds, actions, and mannerisms of the animal.

The behaviours of these mousedeer was observed by a group of villagers from Bukar’sadung, who happened to be in the area collecting firewood. Upon returning to their village, they began imitating the mousedeer's antics, which eventually evolved into the form of a dance.

This dance, performed by two male dancers, is inspired by the behaviours of two mousedeer reacting to a combination of various bird and animal sounds in the forest. The first sound they hear is a "boop-boop," followed by the call of a local black bird known as Terang with a "trang-trang" sound, and then the "treng-treng" sound made by a pangolin.

The combination of these sounds resembles the rhythm of gongs and drums played simultaneously, enticing a female mousedeer to emerge from her hiding spot. The female mousedeer begins to stomp and leap, as though dancing. Her movements are soon joined by a male mousedeer, turning the scene into a lively and joyous display.
