Introduction and history

Zapin Parit Mastar was founded by Ahmad bin Timbul, a trader from Pontian, Johor, around the 1950s. During his trading trips to Karimun and Riau islands, he was inspired by the Zafin Arab Hadhrami and the local zapin performances in Selat Panjang and Riau. His fascination with this art form led him to develop unique zapin steps, which later became known as Zapin Parit Mastar, named after his village. His friends, including Haji Keliwon bin Denan, also learned and performed this zapin, establishing it as a cultural heritage in Kampung Parit Mastar.

Functions and Roles

Initially, Zapin Parit Mastar was performed by men during berinai ceremonies, weddings, and Friday night gatherings after Isyak prayers or tahlil sessions. After the 2000s, it gained recognition beyond Kampung Parit Mastar and began to be performed by both men and women on stage for competitions or cultural events in Johor. The dance functions not only as entertainment but also as a symbol of cultural heritage, fostering a sense of community among its practitioners.

Traditional Attire/ Accessories

Male dancers wear the traditional baju Melayu teluk belanga paired with sampin and songkok. Female dancers don baju kurung, accessorised with necklaces, dokoh (ornamental brooches), and kain dagang. The colours of the costumes are often coordinated to enhance the visual appeal of the performance, while the songkok and samping worn by male dancers symbolise the beauty of traditional Malay artistry.

The primary musical instruments accompanying Zapin Parit Mastar include:

Gambus: The main instrument providing melody.
