Introduction and history

Joget Dangkung is a type of dance that earns its name from the combination of two sounds: "dang" from the beats of the drum and "kung" from the beats of the gong. The drum and gong are the main instruments of the dance.

This dance is a fusion of Kuala Orang Asli and Malays dances, danced along a tune of drums, violin, gong, and singing.  Three musicians, a singer, and four to eight are to dance, depicting the Orang Laut or Kuala Orang Asli (Proto-Malay) sea-fishing way of life.

Functions and Roles

At present, joget dangkong dance is staged at gatherings and special occasions of the Orang Asli Kuala, Johor.

Method / Preparation Method / Presentation Method

The event begins with a singer crooning a lagu tabik to welcome the guests and ward off spirits or calamities.  Specifically, the welcoming song coaxes and cajoles the spirit not to bring any disaster to the event.

When the dancing gets under way, some of the audience enter the stage, joining it  for a small fee. But now this ritual is no longer practised as the ritual has been adapted to the culture of the local.
