INTRODUCTION AND HISTORY

Indian drumming, more commonly known as Urumi Melam, meaning "Urumi Drum," began to flourish in Perlis in 1987, pioneered by the local Indian community. It is typically performed in temples as background music for religious ceremonies, during kavadi processions, wedding traditions, or to celebrate traditional festivals. The instruments used include thavil, urumi, pambai, and thalam. Additionally, the performance features main instruments like the large drum (Tuel) and small drum (Urete Kadai). The nadaswaram (a traditional Indian wind instrument) is also included to create a more dynamic and interesting musical variation.
