CLIMBING A SLIPPERY POLE

This traditional game is popular among the Malaysian communities and famous in northern Peninsular Malaysia especially in Perlis and Kedah. This game with a high competitiveness requires physical strength, creativity and agility. The main aim is to foster the spirit of cooperation.

Basically this game uses a tree, usually a betel nut tree, basted with cooking oil or lubricant oil. This is intended so that the pole or the tree becomes slippery and makes it difficult for players to climb it. The height of the slippery pole depends on the situation and agreement of all parties. The total number of players is between two to 10 people or more.

The prize in the form of money or snacks is hung at the pole tip as a reward. The team that successfully climbs and picks the prize at the slippery pole tip is considered as the winner.
